Problem Solving

The challenge

Using existing speaker components as constraints, the objective was to create a fully functional and cohesive speaker design.

From Space to Sketch

Setting the Scene

A minimal environment with architectural details, earthy green tones, and organic forms from plants, creating a cozy and sophisticated vibe.

Drawing inspiration from the clean geometric shapes and precise straight lines of the space, I wanted my design to complement these elements and seamlessly integrate into the environment.

Breaking It Down: Repurposing Speaker Parts for My Own Design

The speaker used was the Sony SRS-XB23 portable Bluetooth speaker. Disassembling it allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of its components and the construction of the original design.

Starting to understand my Design

I built several prototypes of my design using 10-pound foam to explore proportions and size.

To visualize the placement of internal components, I created 1:1 orthographic drawings on translucent paper, allowing for easy rearrangement and fitting.

Iteration 2

To solve the previous issue, I redesigned the main body into two parts, allowing access to the components from the inside rather than the outside, as in the previous iteration.

Iteration 1

This iteration tested the paper drawing, and everything fit well. However, I needed a better way to seal the driver side due to the design's thickness.

The Final in the Making

The most challenging part of this process was determining how to cut the two bodies so the pockets could be milled without the angles ending up crooked.

For me, the most enjoyable part of prototyping is spray painting and water sanding to achieve a flawless finish.
